Far from the tourist crowds, enjoy this hike on the left side of Elbe close to the Czech border. This is the region of the "Forststeig", the path which we take to reach some mysterious gorges and water sources in the green forest. Sandstone deposits in former quarries tell us about geological times when this region was covered by a subtropical sea.

We climb up to the Zirkelstein and the Kaiserkrone and enjoy the breathtaking view over to the Bohemian region and the panorama on the right Elbe. This spectacular view also overwhelmed Romantic painters and Caspar David Friedrich painted right here his world-famous artwork “Wanderer above the Sea of Fog”.
